ERA Architects + Spacing (2022)
“The Signs That Define Toronto” project began as a book that reveals the history, culture, and stories of the city through some of its most distinctive signs. It evolved into an exhibition, an Instagram page (@signsthatdefine), various speaking opportunities and a walking tour.
I originally pitched the idea to the ERA executive team in 2017 as a continuation of my graduate thesis research on Las Vegas and the Neon Museum. As the editorial lead, I wanted the book to preserve the stories behind some of Toronto’s most recognizable signs and teach local residents the significance of the signs that shape the city around them.
Published in Fall 2022, the 220-page book was developed in collaboration with Spacing, and featured the work of over 20 different contributors. It is packed with vibrant historic photographs accompanied by thoughtful essays on the social and cultural value of the city’s signage.
Following the release of the book, I was invited to design and curate the annual MasterWorks exhibition at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. The show would feature exemplary graduate student work that touched on similar themes explored in the book.
By utilizing various media, the project has been able to continue to grow and reach new audiences, ensuring advocacy for the preservation of the city's signs remains part of the conversation.
